Maine Coon Size Chart

Are you looking for a Maine Coon size chart to compare the size of your kitten to others? Perhaps you’re wondering how big your Maine Coon kitten will get. Your questions will be answered here and you’ll have a better understanding of what to expect from your cat.

What Determines the Size of a Maine Coon?

The size of a Maine Coon is determined primarily by genetics, or the size of the parents. If the cat comes from a line of extra large cats, then it is likely that yours will also be hefty. However, there is no guarantee how small or large any cat will grow to be. There is no way to predict how big a kitten will be as an adult.

Are Male Maine Coons Bigger than Females?

While it may be true that a male will be considerably larger than a female, it is possible that a female will grow to be just as big. This will depend on the genetics and the lines being used for breeding.

Usually, there’s a significant between the size of male and female Maine Coons. In the photo below you’ll see a female Maine Coon at 12 pounds, and a male at 19 pounds.

When is a Maine Coon Full Grown?

Maine Coon cats are slow to mature and are not considered an adult until they’re between three to five years old. They’re the largest domestic cat breed and they’re not afraid to flaunt it.

It’s hard to guess how much one weighs from looking at a photograph. There are many tricks used to make their Maine Coons look larger than life. Really, the only way to know for sure is to adopt a Maine Coon kitten and watch him grow into a big beautiful adult.

The photos shown below are of “Biggie”, one of my biggest Maine Coons. As shown in the photo he’s just one year old and 21 pounds. As of January 2024 he’s 7.5 years old and 28 pounds of steel. He may or may not a little on the chubby side. Maybe he’s just big boned.

UPDATE: My white Maine coon has officially surpassed Big Ben [Pictured above] and is now my biggest boy! Check him out.

How Much Does a Maine Coon Cat Weigh?

Male Maine Coon cats weigh between 20 to 25 pounds (about 6.8 to 11kg), while female cats average 10 to 15 pounds (about 4.5 to 6.8 kg). Hence, their large, rectangular-built body shape, large paws and long hair make them appear even bigger.

How long is a Maine Coon cat?

The average size Maine Coon adult can be between 10 and 16 inches (about 25 and 41 cm) tall and can reach a maximum length of 40 inches 100 cm, including the tail capable of reaching 14 inches (about 36 cm) in length.

Biggest Maine Coon on Record

The Maine Coon cat holds the Guinness Book of World Records for being the longest cat in the world. The popular cat, Barivel, is 47.2 inches long from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail.

As you can see, they can easily out-weigh a small dog. Maine Coon cats are one of the biggest breeds of domestic cats. They are tall and well-built, wide-chested, with a long body. They have big slanted eyes, long, shiny coat, and a long bushy tail. They are very gentle and playful pets, receptive to kids and other animals.

Choose a Breeder Based on the Quality of their Cats

Many breeders will put an emphasis on how “big” their cats are. While that is a fascinating trait that the Maine Coon exhibits, it’s certainly not the most important.

Cats that are extra large are at a greater risk of hip dysplasia, heart disease and arthritis. While they might be cool to look at and admire, they may suffer health issues later in their life because of it.

Sassy Koonz Breeds for Health Instead of Size

Sassy Koonz does not breed for the “giant” sized Maine Coons. Instead, we strive to produce kittens that will grow into healthy, average weight adults. The absence of long term health problems is far more important to us than the size.

Don’t Get Caught Up in the Size Hype

Do your research when choosing a Maine Coon breeder and try not to get caught up in the hype of a breeder who claims to breed “giant” cats. It’s a commonly used selling point, but Coonies are large by nature. they will always make a “regular” cat look tiny when sitting side by side.

Trick Photography – Objects May Appear Bigger

The Maine Coon has taken the internet by storm, fascinating cat lovers all over the world with its beauty, size, and majestic presence. The demand for such a “big” cat has become increasingly overwhelming.

For the ordinary person that isn’t familiar with this “photography” trick, you’re about to discover something new.

You see, the closer something is to the camera lens, in comparison with objects in the background, the bigger it appears in the photograph. Just give it a try right now. Place 2 cups of the same size on a table about 12 inches away from each other. Make them diagonal so that they can both be seen.

Now take a straight on photo of both cups. The cup in the front will look significantly larger than the cup in the back. The same perspective applies to any object that is in front of a camera lens. Whatever is closer to the lens will appear quote larger than anything behind it.

Maine Coon Photos Enhanced to Make Cats Appear Giant

What you’re about to see might shock you! While it’s true that Maine Coons are large cats, the photographs of them can be manipulated in a way to make them seem enormous!

Using the “closer to the lens” technique, I took some photographs of 3 of my own cats. In the first photo, I am holding the cat close to my body. In the second photo, I’m holding the cat with my arms extended outward, thus moving the cat closer to the camera lens. You can clearly see how the size perspective of the cat changes.

We Love Our Maine Coons

Having a big Maine Coon is really fun. They’re super cuddly, they keep me warm at night and they’re an amazing part of my family. There’s so much more to them that just the size.

Being a gentle giant is just one of the physical characteristics that make them so special. There’s a long list of fantastic attributes that this breed exhibits that you don’t want to miss out on!

I prefer to keep my focus on health, temperament, and meeting the Maine Coon breed standard. I think those three areas are the most important. You may also want to find a Maine Coon breeder that puts health and temperament first.

Sassy Koonz has Maine Coon kittens for sale and can deliver to all of the continental United States.
